fast fact

the 2005 prints of the hundred-peso bill have our president's name misspelled as "gloria macapagal arrovo". yet another sign of our government's rapidly-dissipating credibility.

adventures in metrosexuality

i finally tired of wearing shoes all the time so i decided to look for a decent pair of sandals after work yesterday. when my mother and sister caught wind of this, they naturally asked if they could tag along to do some shopping of their own.

this of course translated into their arriving an hour later than our agreed time, and spending the next two arguing about whether i should prioritize porma or tibay [i finally gave up and purchased both their selections to keep them quiet], then two more window shopping for shoes and bags and whatnot.

it was during the last thirty minutes before i lost my temper and walked out on them that i saw super-metro. he was in the women's footwear section looking over boots for his girlfriend [sister? colleague? himself?], clad in a maroon power suit, amber sunglasses, and sporting slicked-back wavy hair. since i was bored out of my wits, i decided to tail him, in order to determine whether or not his stylings had already pushed him over the gender boundary. after only ten minutes, i was able to find solid backing for my hypothesis, based on the following arguments:

1. when yawning, he did not cover his mouth, something a man truly sensitive to appearances would never fail to do.

2. the ends of a rumpled, untucked, hawaiian-print polo were peeking from underneath his coat. additionally, the polo was short-sleeved, as evident from the lack of hawaiian-print cuffs around his wrists - a fashion no-no if i ever saw one.

3. by sheer coincidence, a woman wearing the exact same suit [from padded shoulders to flared ankles] happened to be passing through. she was perhaps twice as taken aback as i was, since i at least had the benefit of being amused.

of course there is the off-chance that his gender-confusion merely results from false confidence in his sense of fashion. living proof that one need not be metro to look homo.

honesty is the best policy

except when you're pissed off, evidently. this is going to need major damage control.

codewarrior > roadwarrior

monday was an interesting day. i got off the lrt at edsa station well before the usual 6:30pm, theoretically giving me enough time to either stop for a quick bite, or clock in early enough to finish my tutoring duties by 8:30. these plans were quickly dashed when i caught sight of the queue to enter the mrt station, which had already extended over half the bridge connecting lrt and mrt.

i stood silently through the wait and the heat and the negative energy [really, anger is contagious], the harsh exchange between the security guard and some loudmouth paimportante, even two men cutting me off in line. i was silent throughout waiting for my train to start, being told that it had "broken down" and that we should transfer to the other train [which was already overflowing with passengers], anticipating the next train and asserting my right to enter, being pushed to the far side by a mob from the other train [evidently, it had "broken down" as well], until the final announcement that services had been suspended, and that we should exit the station asap.

and you know something, i didn't mind at all. i didn't mind the two hours i wasted at the station, the money i spent for my ticket, even the fact that i had to take a bus after all my effort. there are just some things that don't matter, in the face of thesis worries. a wonderful thing, thesis. it really gives you perspective.

on the last leg of my journey home, the wealthy-looking woman beside me paid eight pesos for her jeepney fare, and spent a full two minutes scolding the 'conductor' when he failed to give her her change back.

she really should get a second degree in something. that'll learn her.

a no-brainer

those of you who have been reading my blog since the start of this term will know that our filipi2 prof, the illustrious dr. lakan garcia conducts class as if it were an hr workshop. our biweekly routine consists of a thirty to forty-minute lecture on human psychological and ethical work traits, an accompanying graded activity, and a wrap-up cum introduction for the next lesson.

this week's learnings were focused on the performance difference between left-brained and right-brained individuals, the former of which are more effective in management and the latter in rank-and-file. i had long thought myself to be a logical left, but a comprehensive written exam proved otherwise, that i was more of a kinetic right. in hindsight, it was the more fitting answer, since lefties are planners before doers and righties are doers before planners.

as usual, we spent a few minutes discussing student curiosities before dismissal. most questions involved sir lakan discerning whether the left or right brain was at work in certain anecdotal situations. after a few were done with, he reiterated that lefties preferred to think rather than act, and righties vice versa. he then added that lefties often had a systematically organized room, while righties were more avant-garde with their belongings.

then of course some smart aleck had to ask: "paano po kung magulo po ang kwarto ko at gusto ko s'yang ayusin, pero hindi ko po masimulan? kaliwa po ba 'yun o kanan?"

without missing a beat, sir turned to him and said: "hijo, tamad ka lang."

tama nga naman.

ill omens

GEMINI (May 21 to June 20): Authority figures are not receptive to your suggestions at work. Don't let this get you down. This is a temporary black cloud on your horizon.

LIBRA (Sept. 23 to Oct. 22): An older friend might squelch your bright ideas or criticize you for some reason. Don't react. It's no big deal. When the annals of history are written, who will care?

AQUARIUS (Jan. 20 to Feb. 18): Be patient with partners, parents, and bosses today. Don't be critical of others. And don't react to criticism from others. It's no big deal.

you know you're in for a beating when all thesis group members' horoscopes are thematically related. needless to say, we were p0wned.
