but it wasn't

turns out i was invited purely for display purposes. to be fair, sir paul did give me a chance to talk: he fielded me a scholarship question posed by a student. since i was denied the pleasure of prematurely corrupting the audience's mindsets, i'll use this entry to lay out what i would have said, had i been given the opportunity:

college is as different from high school as high school was different from grade school. for now you have your trophies, your friends, your reputation. come next year, those'll be as meaningless as your "quietest class" award back in grade four.

choose a course on something you like, not something you love. that way, the burnout won't hit you so hard.

you can actually fail subjects in college, sometimes just by absenting yourself once too many. "babawi ako sa finals" only works in high school, if at all.

with great freedom comes greater responsibility. the people who have classes so late they can sleep until noon got those classes by getting up at six in order to make it to the head of the section adjustment queue.

time management is key. three-hour breaks may seem like a lot now but probably the only college-level activity you can really finish in that amount of time is lunch. if you're not careful, come end of term you'll literally have to choose which projects to complete and which to let go of.

the probability of acing a subject is dependent on the professor, the time, and your ability, in that order. on the subject of time, you are unlikely to do well in any subject that starts before 10 or after 5.

choose your friends wisely, but don't expect them to last. half your block will have shifted or dropped out by the middle of second term.

the affinity for videoke is optional, but expect to visit providence tower at least once a month. you will down at least one beer and smoke at least one cigarette before you graduate; some may even try something a bit more illegal.

some people have hobbies, others have vices, still other have orgs. my suggestion? one of each.

Too bad you weren't able to actually tell them that. I would've appreciated something like that when I was college-bound. If it had made the right impression, that is. I do agree with everything.

P.S. I agree so much that I actually decided to post a comment. XP

Haha. Friends don't last long. Quite true.
