curse cards
since president gloria had declared monday to be another holiday by proxy, our curse card distribution was moved to wednesday. since we dlsu and csb students were already enjoying our semestral break, this change of dates proved rather negative, resulting for most of my batchmates in 24 more hours of agonized waiting. a few who, like myself, had been invited to s15's annual batangas outing, had to back out as well, due to various schedule conflicts.
i. advandb: 3.0
this subject was none too difficult objectively, but the professor clearly made it her mission to prevent anyone from taking a liking to it. and yet, despite her frequent negative comparisons of us to her other class [who, it turned out, were frequently being compared to us as well], vague explanations of course requirements, blantant favoritism, and penchent for shorts cut a good foot above the knee, she did, in the end, give rather generous marks.
don't think that i'd seek her out as a professor again, though - i feel a strange mixture of queasiness and pity when i see her, which is not at all conducive to the learning environment. perhaps if she lost a few hundred pounds, her uncanny likeness to master splinter would be strong enough to replace nausea with nostalgia.
as for the pity, all i have to say is that when a 300-pound rat in
pekpek shorts calls herself pretty when she clearly isn't, she, barring delusion, must be desperately lonely.
ii. advanos: 1.5
a wildcard if i ever saw one. i'd focused all my attention on advandb so the final exam caught me completely by surprise. i suppose it did serve me right for cutting class four weeks in a row, but the irony was that i scored relatively high in the killer finals, and it was my mp score that pulled me down. turns out she's one of those teachers who only say positive things during mp defense, then backstabs you on paper.
iii. intphil: 3.5
although i am still disappointed that multiple-choice and identification questions composed most of our tests in this subject, i don't deny that essays being kept to a minimum was largely the cause for my relatively high grade.
long story short, if you're going to take gripaldo for intphil, buy his book, memorize the answers to the guide questions, and you're guaranteed a 3.0, at least. if you actually want to learn something from this course, feel free to audit ms. velasco's class at the same time.
iv. prcst-1: 4.0
no, pointwest isn't so overcome by my genius contributions that they gave me the highest possible grade; this is a pass or fail subject. it's part of the faculty's new technique for yanking up terminal-year averages, along with the four thesis subjects [more on this later]. i still haven't decided where i'll go after college so i'm just as likely to reunite with the pointwest crew as to apply for a teaching job at zobel. either way, i hear the pay's none too shabby.
v. relstri: 3.0
not too bad, considering the amount of effort [or lack of it] that i put into this subject. it's just as difficult to fail ms. castillo's class as it is to ace it, given her very subjective course requirements. although this may seem like a godsend to most students, i'd rather take my chances with estonillo again, thank you very much.
vi. stresme: 4.0
although our group was somehow able to pass the defense on the first try, fat-ass still ensured that we were busy with revisions the entire term. we finally lucked out on version 1.6, since he would constantly note down three to four problems for the next revision, then identify three to four more on that version, even if those supposedly new issues were already present on the earlier drafts. in short, he spead out the thirty or so grammatical errors, ambiguous sentences, and vague definitions present in our initial document over a period of two months.
i suppose that it is a simple way to ensure that students are kept busy the entire term, since those who already receive the pass mark aren't really that motivated to pursue optional revisions [
kwatro na rin naman e], but it does nothing to repair student-teacher relationships.
academics-wise, this term proved rather lucky for me: i made it to a 3.000 average, although my grade in introos ensured my absence from this term's dean's list. owel, what's new.
this year's outing wasn't as entertaining as the previous years', since the rain killed off most of our leisure options. the food was still top-notch, as expected, but most of our time was spent indoors, where bj proceeded to extort a rather hefty rent from us via a series of poker games.
"what's your name? what doesn't matter what your name is!"
"
hindi ako lasing...
nakuko lang ako...
nakuko."
"
para akong motorcycle...
vroom!
vroom!"
"
madilim ang gabi
at bilog ang buwan.
sa balkonahe,
may bata at may kapitan.
sabi ng bata:
'
kapitan,
kapitan,
magkwento ka naman;
malaming ang simoy
at natatakot ako.'
at sabi ng kapitan:
'
madilim ang gabi
at bilog ang buwan.
sa balkonahe,
may bata at may kapitan...'"
"
kakarating n'yo lang ba?"
"
punit?
anong punit kanin?"
"what's up, dog?"
sige ingat.ΓΌ
