the great marshall valencia always maintained that the mentally challenged would one day rule the world. not as far-fetched a prophesy as it seems, actually.
webster defines insanity as: "
a : a deranged state of the mind usually occurring as a specific disorder (as schizophrenia) and usually excluding such states as mental retardation, psychoneurosis, and various character disorders b : a mental disorder". simply put, according to this definition, any thought, word, or deed that is counter-intuitive, unintelligible, or threatening to a man of average intelligence is a form of lunacy.
case in point, the following conversation i overheard on a bus from ayala to bicutan, which i recreate here to the best of my spelling ability:
"
pare,
reyon leyon neyon?"
"
reyon leyon neyon?
sigurado ka?"
"
oo. herb."
"herb?"
"herb."
"
sige. yellow submarine."
"ok. yellow submarine."
and there i was, thinking what the fuck. but i suppose it's a fair trade, considering that not many people would understand a conversation between specialists, be they mathematicians, beauticians, or indeed dota players. it's a strange security as well, knowing that one can discuss sensitive information in public without giving anything away to those not concerned.
this is what our mental health system lacks - the patients in our institutes are merely people who are without their other half. they've lost something alright, but they're looking for understanding, and a diagnosis isn't going to bring them any closer to finding it. the last thing anybody wants to hear is that what he's saying is bullshit, anyway.
