all in the family

A high school student accused of poisoning his classmate at the Philippine Science High School pleaded not guilty Monday to frustrated homicide charges filed before a Quezon City court.

"Joseph" (not his real name) was with his lawyer when he was arraigned before Judge Lourdes Geron. The frustrated murder charge against Joseph and his friend "Mario" stemmed from last year's alleged poisoning of their classmate, Marie Angelynne Fabro. Joseph and Mario were accused of lacing a water jug with the chemical mercury nitrate, from which Fabro drank. The girl nearly died after ingesting the chemical.

Joseph's mother, meanwhile, said her son is a victim of bad publicity. She said that the case should not have been publicized in the first place. She added that her son is a victim too. Fabro, however, said she is grateful that the wheels of justice are finally turning. "At least we can now look forward to the trial."

The trial is set to begin next month.

once again, it would seem that a proud alumnus of our illustrious high school has brought honor to the alma mater, by way of deeds heroic enough to warrant headlines across the country. but wait! before we carelessly delegate roles in black and white, should we stop to consider whether, in fact, we've casted the characters correctly? is it feasible that this series of events is some laughable accident, and our friend "joseph" is, as his mother claims, as much a victim as the girl who underwent a hundred thousand pesos' worth of medical treatment?

i'll spell it out for you: i don't think so.

unlike the majority of filipinos concerning themselves with this bit of news, i know the perpetrator as more than an alias or even a full name. he is the unfortunate brother of an equally 'brilliant' grade school classmate notorious for various unsolved mysteries, mostly along the lines of disappearing electronics, traces of certain bodily fluids, and blank answer sheets returning with large a's stamped on them [this last ability earned him the moniker of "doctor m—"]. last i heard, this classmate is now a bisexual senior at mit. yes, the mit.

so if we are to believe what the evidence dictates then, yes, i am inclined to believe that this "joseph" would consider more than the usual options when guarding his interests; yes, it is possible that whatever influences molded the elder sibling got to him as well; and yes, he had good reason to think he could get away with it.

personality is formed over years of observation, and even the most sudden of changes aren't. if the boy who drowns cats isn't corrected, then we have no right to be surprised when he discovers that women struggle in much the same way.
